If at all possible, use the Apple-branded keyboard and mouse that shipped with your Mac. If you installed any expansion cards, remove those too. So before you get drastic and try safe mode or other measures, shut down your Mac and disconnect all wired and wireless (Bluetooth) peripherals except your keyboard, mouse, and anything else necessary to reboot. Often it’s those third-party peripherals that get our Macs into trouble.
